Taran's last words tonight before zzzzzzzzzzzzz

(posted by Connor) Taran has a habit of getting drowsier and drowsier before suddenly popping out with an off-the-wall comment as though part of some last ditch effort to avoid sleep. Tonight it was this:
"Daddy! If there's a storm tonight, I'm going to dart out!" I assumed he meant that he'd dart out of his room into Mom and Dad's room, so I said , that's okay, you can do that. He repeated, "I'll dart out! And then I'll try to drink up all the rain. Hopefully that will make me bigger, and I'll stop the lightning and thunder. Hopefully, I'll get bigger and then you'll have to buy me a bunk bed, so when I'm on the top I can reach up and stop the lighting and thunder too." I was smiling but said nothing. A few moments later he was out.

Mother's Day Message

At Taran's preschool they made Mother's day cards and asked the kids to complete the following, Something I really love about my mother is...

Taran's answer: She gives me special books to read and toys I've never played with before. She even keeps me safe from lightning and thunder.

Zig Zag Zapped

While I was nursing Tovi tonight Taran entertained us with this little tale

One time I was being chased at school and suddenly I was hit by a zig zag (lightning). I didn't scream but I did cry a little. The teacher was really scared and ran in and closed the window. There was some thunder too.

Taran's Special Drink Request

Taran really likes sweet drinks (soda, juice, etc) but I try to monitor how much he drinks so he doesn't get an overdose of sugar or other sweetners. Often I'll dilute his drink slightly with water. Taran didn't mind until he got a taste of the undiluted stuff. Tonight he was explicit (sort of) about the dilution...

"Mama I'd like some green goop juice (kiwi strawberry punch) with a tiny bit of water, so tiny that it's not any. That's what I'd like."

May 28, Taran's good-night story.

(narrated by Connor)
Taran likes to hear "scary stories" at bed time. Tonight he wanted me to tell him a story about "Jim and the Firetruck". I have no idea what he's talking about. He prompted me several times and I told him I didn't know that story but if he could tell me how it goes I could fill in the blanks. He said with a degree of earnestness "Fine! Fine, fine, fine!" And then he began this yarn...
This was when I was really little, and you and Mama and Tovi were killed for a little bit. (Yoiks!! Killed for a little bit?!) I got in the car and I drove to Target. I told the buyer there that I was all alone and could I have these things? And they buyer said yes, I could. So I got the blah, blah, blah, and the RED GARBAGE TRUCK! And then I drove the truck ... (inarticulate excited jabbering) ... and I lost all my pets, and I got to a house and there were some creatures (he really said "creatures") and I knocked on the door and asked if they were my pets and they said "Certainly NOT" but I took them anyway and I put them all in my pocket. And at next house there were also some creatures inside, and I knocked on the door and asked them if THEY were my pets, and they were! So I put them in my pocket too, but now I was pretty full so I went back to my house and put them in the fenced part. And then I walked around the neighborhood and at one house there was a big wolf in the house with a baby - but he didn't eat the baby because he wasn't a big BAD wolf, he was a good wolf... (couldn't make out what he was saying here, maybe continuing his walk around the neighborhood...) and the house was ALL GONE! And so I looked around and around but I couldn't find another pretty house, and I found a construction site and I asked the construction site if they would build me a new pretty house. And they said yes, and they started building my house but it takes a LONG time, and so a long time later I came back and they were all done and they were all gone. And so I have the house!
We think the business with all of us getting "killed for a little bit" is coming from Stuart Little since his original mouse family was killed when he was really little. I think he got the idea of the "good" wolf from me because I've occasionally turned the story of the 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf on it's head with the wolf getting harassed by the three bad pigs. No clue where he came up with the business with the pets and even calling them "creatures". I just struggled to keep from laughing out loud, and also tried to tone down his animation a bit since the night story time is supposed to be mellowing him out, not getting him spun up! His eyes were drifting around, practically unfocused towards the end of this story. I'm not 100% sure he wasn't actually rambling along in a waking dream, but at the end of the story he perked himself right up to ask me to tell a "scary story" now. I said that instead it was time to sing our May songs and he was out by the final verse.

Introduction

I have been meaning to start a journal/log/diary to jot down some of the memorable things the kids say and do from time to time but until today it never occured to use a blog. Why not! I regret all the things I've forgotton because I didn't write them down but I will look forever to having a record starting today. It will be log format so please forgive my spelling and grammar.

Taran: At Flat top park today we had the playground to ourselves (not unusual) for a good 30-40 minutes after which a mother and her daughter and son joined us. Taran was delighted to see other kids. He was beaming as he headed towards them "to play". They were, as it turns out, on the cautious and shy side but Taran still persisted. I encouraged him to say Hi and say, "my name is Taran". He chased after them and as he passed their mother he called out, "I'm going to make introductions!" I have no idea where he got that. He caught up to them and was out of ear shot from me but I saw him talking to the daugher. She was 7 and her brother was 3 I learned after chatting with the mom. Shortly aftwards they had to leave. Later I asked Taran what he said and he had the following story.

He claims he offered them pizza but they both replied, "No we do not want pizza. We don't like pizza". Taran than "threw all the pizzas away" but then the kids changed their minds so he got on his rollar skates and delivered some cheese pizzas to them. I don't know what the actual exchange was but found Taran's embellished fictional version very amusing. He added at bedtime that he really liked the girl and next time he would ask her name.

Tovi was happy to interact as well. She ran up to the mom waving with one hand and holding out a tiny green plastic pellet (from an air gun?) that she had found on the ground. The mom was very pleasant and chatted back as Tovi described in great detail how wonderful her treasure was. Tovi does have a number of words but many of them do not sound very close to what she thinks shes saying. I've been told my early speech was similar.
